Emanuel said the couple didn't anticipate the reaction the dress would draw.

"Royals aren't supposed to wear black, apart from when in mourning," she said. "And you know, it was dangerously low ... So of course when she did wear it the press went absolutely crazy and every front page had pictures of Diana wearing the black dress stepping out of the car.

"I think from that minute on, Diana became a fashion icon that the press couldn't wait to see what she would be wearing next."

The dress was part of a collection that includes the blouse Diana wore for her official engagement portrait in 1981, and the cotton toile prototype of her wedding gown — also designed by the Emanuels — which was used to ensure the fit was just right.

The National Gallery of Zimbabwe is hosting the Zimbabwe Fashion Week next month. The event is similar to the popular fashion weeks hosted internationally in countries such as South Africa, France, United States and the United Kingdom.

“Fashion weeks are used as reference points by fashion buyers, department stores, glossy magazines and everyday fashion enthusiasts to see what they can put together in their wardrobes for the next season,” said the Zimbabwe Fashion Week Communications Officer, Onai Abote.

Abote said that the fashion week is going to be a local platform that is proudly Zimbabwean, aimed at creating a definitive voice in fashion, on the continent and in the world. The fashion week team is currently identifying talent from aspiring and established designers who will have to produce collections that will set autumn and winter 2011 trends.

The Zimbabwe Fashion Week was created by Priscilla Chigariro, an internationally recognised catwalk and photographic model who began her career in year 2000 when she grabbed the Super Face title at the ZimSun Hotel’s Supermodel search, which led her to the Face of Africa competition the following year.

expand beyond intimate apparel and into a lifestyle brand, which includes
opportunities in product categories such as fragrance, jewelry,
accessories, footwear, headwear, handbags and costumes as well as
partnering with international distributors in countries such as Korea,
Brazil, Japan, China and Canada.

At 1 p.m. ET Monday, June 7, American fashion designer Oscar de la Renta will unveil his Resort 2011 collection before a select coterie of fashion critics, buyers, celebrities and other industry professionals on a runway in New York — as well as thousands of fans watching the show live on Livestream and Facebook.

A number of fashion blogs will also be hosting the Livestream, and users can use the platform’s chat features to discuss the collection with other viewers on FacebookFacebookFacebook and Twitter during the show. A few minutes before the show starts, the designer will address the online audience about the collection and the company’s social media efforts.

The event is part of a broader shift in the attitude of the fashion industry, which has been frequently criticized for its hyper-exclusivity and the slow rate at which it has embraced certain technologies, like sustainable manufacturing and online platforms.

It wasn’t until this February that a small number of fashion houses, including Louis Vuitton and Dolce & Gabanna, began streaming their runway shows for the first time on their websites and mobile applications, and even then only a few of those shared their videos on Facebook and Livestream as well. Now, fashion enthusiasts can see entire collections at the same time as the buyers and press, and begin sharing their opinions about each look as it comes down the runway.

“The audience of [our] shows has evolved over the last 50 years,” explained Alex Bolen, the CEO of Oscar de la Renta. “Previously it was the buyers who were sitting in the first and foremost seats and while they are an extremely important constituency for our show, there’s a broader constituency we want to know about our brand.”

Oscar de la Renta has ramped up its social media efforts as of late, leveraging Facebook to share behind-the-scenes footage with its more than 30,000 fans and to drive sales at its online store. The brand is also very engaged with followers on Twitter via the whimsical and personable @OscarPRGirl.

“We’re a family-owned, relatively small business competing against big players,” Bolen said. “We have to constantly be looking for ways to get an edge, to punch above our weight. It’s my belief that some people are moving slowly in the e-commerce space. We embrace the fact that things are rapidly changing, understand the fact that we’ll have some missteps, but we want to be in the game and figure out which direction things are moving.”

Although Oscar de la Renta has been relatively quick to appropriate social media resources, there are several reasons why the industry as a whole has been hesitant to do so. For one thing, the fashion industry has always thrived on the aura of exclusivity it creates around the unveiling of its collections; invitations for major fashion shows are generally reserved for celebrities and the industry elite.

Now, thanks to the livestream, anyone with an InternetInternetInternet connection can watch the runway show live. As Natalie Massenet, founder and chairman of Net-a-porter.com explained, “Buyers and the press have been privileged and blessed to be in this little club, but now the consumer is in the room with us, and everything has changed.”

Timing is a larger issue. Collections are generally unveiled six months before they are purchased and worn by consumers; fall clothes are shown in February, just before spring weather arrives, and spring previews occur in September, just as consumers are stocking up on chunky knits and leggings for the cooler months. The clothes that Oscar de la Renta shows today will not appear in stores until the holiday season.

“What’s the point of showing these clothes so early on… when you’re promoting a product that’s not even available to buy?” Lazaro Hernandez, the co-founder of fashion label Proenza Schouler, asked in an interview with Portfolio.

Bolen acknowledged the general fear that the event will be “overexposed and the clothes will be tired in six months.” The only solution, he said, was to get the clothes into stores more quickly, although production, especially work by hand, takes a certain amount of time. “But there’s no stopping it,” he said. “The information is going to be out there. It’s not as if we’re going to be able to prevent people from looking at our clothes…We [just need] to get quicker.”

Fashion Jewelry and Accessories Trade Association (FJATA) Statement on Cadmium in Jewelry

Safety is the number one concern of the fashion jewelry industry. The FJATA is disappointed that the Associated Press story on cadmium in Miley Cyrus jewelry once again omitted the important fact that safe levels of cadmium have existed in fashion and fine jewelry (both adult and children's jewelry) for decades, and no adverse health effects in either children or adults have ever been reported from its presence.

The AP story relies on private testing conducted by Professor Jeffrey Weidenhamer, tests that neither he nor AP has agreed to share with the FJATA. The story also attributes the fact that the safety of jewelry should be based on the level of cadmium that "escapes if the item is sucked, bitten or swallowed" to an industry position. In fact, migration (or "what escapes") is the basis for accepted toy safety standards in the U.S. (ASTM F-963) and Europe (EN-71-3). Reliance on this kind of migration standard has helped establish the safety of toys around the world, and is now required in the U.S. for toys. FJATA endorses testing children’s jewelry in accordance with these internationally accepted toy safety standards.

The AP story wrongly suggests that the featured products are children’s products when they are clearly labeled for consumers 14 years and older and, according to the retailer, were available for sale in the store's ladies apparel section. In passing the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA), Congress determined that “children’s products” should be defined as products designed and intended primarily for children 12 and under. In fact, a proposal to define children’s products as those that might appeal to a child was rejected because such a definition was viewed to be overbroad, since almost any item that could be found around the house might fall in that category.

FJATA strongly endorses labeling as a way to clearly indicate to the consumer the intended age of the user. Many common jewelry motifs, like flowers and animals, or stars, appeal to adults, but also may appeal to children. Labeling provides a clear indication of the intended primary target user. Another factor is whether the product is represented in its packaging, promotion or advertising as appropriate for use by children 12 and under. The alternative, determining that anything that might appeal to a child is a children's product, as suggested in the AP story, is a standard that is not only impossible to meet, it is inconsistent with Congressional mandates and contrary to basic common sense. Many FJATA members already test to internationally accepted standards that have helped to assure the safety of toys around the world. FJATA supports adoption of a federal standard for children’s jewelry based on these international standards.

Retro-Chic Rules, Indian Designers Go Back To Roots

Raw silk, cotton, jute, Indias traditional fabrics are finding favour among top designers raring to break new ground in the highly competitive Indian fashion market.

The tendency to ape Western cuts and style in recent years has seen the country's own rich craftsmanship take a backseat.

But a reversal in the trend was evident at this year's Wills India Fashion Week, where classic couturier Tarun Tahiliani marked the return to traditional craft with hand-made Indian fabrics and embroidery in his signature draping style.

"I consciously used Indian fabric. I feel we've been a little too Western," Tahiliani said after his show at the event, one of the two most prestigious events on the Indian fashion calendar. Tahiliani's theme at the show was "Return to The Craft" highlighting qualities that he said had been lost in the "hyper-explosion of brands, stores, distribution and price wars". In keeping with his theme, the designer showcased gilets (sleeveless jackets) over tiny T-shirts, sarongs and his trademark sari drapes held together by embroidered belts. Tahiliani, whose previous shows had a more international flavour, is not alone in his new-found mission.

A host of upcoming and promising designers are looking to affirm their cultural heritage and break free from the Western mould to carve out "Indian" identities.

Samant Chauhan, from the impoverished eastern state of Bihar, is trying to revive the handloom industry by focusing on raw silk and making it appealing to the global market.

Another example is designer Nitin Bal Chauhan, who gave up a scholarship offer to study fashion abroad and went back to his village in northern Himachal Pradesh, where the skills of local craftsmen were dying.

"I have been promoting raw silk and using it a lot in texturing, interlacing and knits to create layered outfits," said Samant Chauhan. "The silk I use has been hand-woven and made from an eco-friendly process without the use of any dyes. "I have been working on raw silk ever since I was in college because I could see that the craftsmen, in spite of being so talented, were not getting their due. So I decided to do something about it through my work."

Samant Chauhan said designers need not look westwards for inspiration as India has a rich history of craftsmanship.

"Our designs are so intricate and rich that international designers can never match us. We must take our traditional craftsmanship forward and present it in a way that it is liked in the international market," he said.

Tahiliani, whose elaborate golden bridal outfit for Bollywood celebrity Shilpa Shetty was a hit among wealthy socialites, said most designers resisted working with handloom materials because they do not "construct too well." "It is beautiful to wear as a sari or as a dupatta (stole), but if you want to make different clothes with it, you can't. You can't have perfect fits with handloom as it doesn't mould like the fabrics you get abroad.

"In fact, our fabrics were never made for tailoring. And I like my clothes to be structured. For me structure and fit are very important. So I have used quilting in my clothes this season.

"We need to reinvent Indian crafts and churn it up for something new. A lot of Indian designers are now moving towards using Indian fabrics and designs with a western touch."

"The retrospective of 100 ensembles includes some of the most important haute couture creations originally shown in the exhibition 'Valentino: Themes and Variations' at Les Arts Decoratifs, Paris, in 2008," he said.

The exhibition explores Valentino's techniques and recurring motifs such as ornamentation, the use of geometric and animal prints, frills, folds and pleats as well as the creative possibilities of volume, surface and line.

Garments worn by Hollywood stars and high society figures such as Cate Blanchett, Nicole Kidman, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Elizabeth Taylor and others will be displayed along with the stunning black and white gown Julia Roberts wore to the 73rd Academy Awards in 2001.

In addition to a number of ensembles from Valentino's noted 'White Collection' from 1968, the exhibition features a selection of signature 'Valentino red' dresses, including one from the couturier's first collection - 'Fiesta', a strapless cocktail dress in draped tulle from Spring/Summer 1959.

The exhibition, curated by Pamela Golbin, curator-in-chief for the Fashion and Textiles collection of Les Arts Decoratifs, Paris, also considers the future design direction of the Valentino label with five recent creations from the House of Valentino's new creative directors Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli.

"We are honoured to be the exclusive Australian venue for this extraordinary exhibition that will engage followers of Valentino and fashion lovers from all over the country," Mr Ellwood said.

A hardcover companion to the exhibition, published by Rizzoli, celebrates Valentino Garavani's 49 year career, focusing on his most important and emblematic haute couture designs. 'Valentino, Retrospective: Past/Present/Future' is available for purchase at the Gallery Store and online.
